We are excited to share a major achievement for the South Devon arts community, as featured in We Are South Devon! Ellie Johnson, the Plymouth-based artist known as Mrs Murals, has been officially crowned the winner of the Women in Arts, Media and Culture Award at the West Country Women’s Awards.
Ellie was chosen from a staggering pool of over 2,000 nominees across the South West, standing out for her incredible ability to transform public spaces into vibrant community landmarks.
A Win for Community Art
Ellie’s work goes far beyond simple decoration; her murals have become a source of comfort and inspiration in local institutions:
-
Healthcare: Her artwork brings color and calm to the Children’s Theatres at Derriford Hospital.
-
Education: She has completed numerous projects for schools throughout South Devon.
-
Public Spirit: Judge Trish Caller noted that Ellie’s application was “bursting” with community support and moving quotes from those “blessed” by her work.
Honoring Plymouth’s Leaders
Ellie wasn’t the only local success story. Other Plymouth-based winners recognized at the ceremony included:
-
Small Business of the Year: EM-MAgination Craft
-
Women in STEM Award: It Takes a Village CIC
-
Employer of the Year: The Family Law Co
A Note from the Winner
“Running a successful business in the arts can be challenging. I truly appreciate the support from my local community, which has played a key role in my success today. This incredible honour means so much to me!” — Ellie Johnson (Mrs Murals)
